Holly wrenched herself away. Chief Hardy. She smoothed her hair and her clothes. Did they look like they’d been making out on the job? The chief already strongly disliked her.

With flushed cheeks, Trent stepped behind the desk and shuffled papers. “Come on in.”

Chief Hardy entered, her lips pressed into a grim line as she took in their appearance and red cheeks and guilty looks. She cleared her throat. “I expect that paperwork to be done by the time you leave.” She addressed Holly. “You might want to let him get work done.”

“Right away,” Trent responded in his polite officer-at-work tone.

After Chief Hardy left, Holly said, “I guess that means you can’t leave early to go tree shopping with me?”

Trent gestured to all the folders on his desk. “Can’t now. How about you get the tree, and we’ll set it up and decorate it tonight?” He lowered his voice. “And pick up where we left off.”

She offered him a knowing smile. “Sounds good, Officer.”
